Founding Gardeners By Andrea Wulf Vintage Books 2012 Hardcover, Paperback and Digital editions Available from Bookshop.orgThis dense discussion of the gardening activities of America’s Revolutionary War heroes relies on correspondence among Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison and others to recreate the landscape dreams of men (and some women) whose creative experimentation in farming and horticulture seems to have been a relaxing breather while shaping battle campaigns and, later, an entirely new form of government. Not light reading, and a bit sloggy at times! But a fascinating and well-researched history of the colonial gardening period that rewards the reader with plenty of nuggets about the personal life of historical figures who apparently were just as obsessed with gardening as we are today.
